aqua madora

Created by Ana Baer-Carrillo, Dani Beauchamp and Randy Gibson, “Aqua Madora” is a large scale yet intimate work for piano, sine wave drones, dancer and video.

A seamless blend of music, dance, and images, “Aqua Madora” recreates the essence of mourning and its 5 stages. Taking ideas developed through working on Anger “Aqua Madora” is a small, intimate work that moves from anger to bargaining, depression, denial, and finally acceptance. The haunting chords and melodies of the re-tuned piano play off these same themes, reacting to, and changing because of, the movements on stage.

The music, a highly structured improvisation, performed live, follows closely the dramatic arc of the piece. The piano is tuned to a unique tuning which allows for smaller intervals than are normally possible on a piano. These intervals, just intonation quarter tones, are meant to evoke water and the ocean. Their particular vibrations are special, and truly must be experienced live.

“Aqua Madora” received its world premiere as part of the Sans Souci Film Festival at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art June 5 and 6, 2006. It has been shown with recorded music in San Francisco in 2006 and Giessen, Germany in 2007. As a part of the continuing avant-premieres “Aqua Madora” was performed with a new introduction in Morelia, Mexico at the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo October 27, 2006, and will be performed in a slightly expanded version as part of “Permanent Wilting” at Highways Performance Space in Los Angeles, August 17 and 18, 2007.
